Cynthia(Thia) Maki Tsuruta

I was born on 天皇誕生日, December 23.
The same day as the Japanese Emperor! It was a different year though: 1961.

I was born in North Carolina, U.S.A., and grew up in Pennsylvania. After I graduated from High School I moved to California, near my Grandmother’s and Uncle’s, to go to college there. I actually went to a few colleges. The largest being the University of California at Santa Cruz.

However the best learning/education I received was to bear my four children. I married at the age of 21 with my first husband, who is Japanese, and our first son was born when I was 22. Following was our first daughter in ’86. That was the year we moved to Nishio, Japan.

Two more children; another girl and boy was born in Nishio.

Over the years we have been able to visit family and friends in the States, and vice versa, keeping that connection alive. As would have it, our last son has chosen to pursue his basketball dreams and is in High School in Santa Cruz California, living with my second husband while he attends High School there since the Spring of 2007.

And I~I am able to spread my life between two places at present. With all the amazing support of my family, and “NAC team”, I now work in Santa Cruz as a homemaker to support my guys there, then return to Nishio when I can to do all I should do to help here at our dear school.

I’m so proud of my school. I love what it has become, and who it represents. The many, many families and friends have been an incredible blessing in my own families lives!

I have to divide my time for now between Santa Cruz and Japan, but NAC is never, never far from my heart and soul. I am forever connected and grateful for our lives in Nishio, and to all the people who continue to take part in our school and lives. I never see that I will NOT have a home here.

All my thanks and love to the people who help make our school and lives special and strong!


Hiromi Tashiro

Hello!

I’m manager of N.A.C.! Hiromi.
It has been more than seven years since I started working with Thia here in Nishio. I used to be Thia’s student before. Yes, I used to study English at N.A.C. (of course I am still studying!)

I got married and now have two children. My sons are studying English at N.A.C. now too. My husband as well! So my family has stayed connected with N.A.C. for quite a while!

In fact there are other families who have grown up and sent their own children to this same school.

I cherish the many connections I’ve made through N.A.C.


Elaine K. Beckett Tipping

I was born in the United States, in California. Ever since I was young, my family has hosted many Japanese exchange students, many with which we are still in contact. Because of this, my love for Japan and all things Japanese started early. I studied three years of Japanese in High School.
 
I graduated Gunn High School and attended Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, a small liberal arts school. There I studied many things, but I majored in East Asian Studies and minored in Japanese. I took many classes on Japan and my love for the country only continued to grow. I chose my major too late, so I was unable to go study in Japan. I was worried that I might never get to go to Japan, but luckily I met Thia and everything fell into place!
 
I met my husband at college and, after I graduated from Lawrence, we married on August 16th, 2009. As both of us minored in Japanese, Japan holds so many opportunities for us, and we're looking forward to living there!
 
I am looking forward to teaching English, and I can't wait to make many friends!


Julie Rogers

I was born in Sydney Australia but have a deep love for and connection with Japan. I have a long connection with NAC, starting as an English teacher with the school back in 2003. I am very happy to have returned to the school again this year.

I really enjoy the relaxed and caring atmosphere of NAC and I teach groups and individuals of all ages. I have a Cambridge University certified qualification in teaching English as a second language.

My passion for travel, languages and exploring different cultures has enabled me to develop a new speciality English course, 'English for the overseas traveller'.

I also speak Japanese and use these skills for translation and interpreting. I am also involved in a volunteer Documentary Film Project, 'Peace on Wheels', which is about a Japanese disabled artist and peace lover. It has been made in Japanese and English. In my spare time... (do I have any spare time?)... well when I do... I enjoy dancing, chanting and taking time out 'to chill' in nature and calm my soul in the temples of India and Japan.


Ischin Maki

It’s been 22 years since associating with N.A.C. For as long as I can remember many students came to study, as well as some of my peers. It was usually lively at home which served as our school. Because I was home schooled I often enjoyed taking part in classes.

N.A.C. has moved several times, and as I’ve matured, I don’t pop in on classes like I used to.

Now I am in charge of restoring and beautifying N.A.C. I do my best for making our school house comfortable, so that students may feel pleasant and at ease there.

I’d like to share something I’ve always felt from being involved with English lessons and activities at N.A.C. In a foreign language you often discover a part of yourself which you may not have noticed through your own language. You might be able to express things you wouldn’t dare say of embarrassment, or that is difficult to express in your own language. However with another language we can say things without embarrassment.

Learning a foreign language is not just a means for communicating with one another. Learning another language is like a flashlight that can light up a part of your self not seen before. It’s a way to explore! So let’s explore what lies ahead together!


Taka Tsuruta

Hello everybody! Long time no see! This is Taka.
So many things have happened at N.A.C. these past ten years.
N.A.C.'s 20 year Anniversary party was one wonderful celebration.
2011 will be the 25 year Anniversary!
For these days I'm working with Thia in Santa Cruz, California.
Helping as an advisor and translator for N.A.C. too.
When any of our students come to California we're so happy to help you see around this area of California and San Francisco.

Brad Tipping

I was born in Maryland, U.S.A, but I grew up in Wisconsin.  After High school, I studied physics and Japanese language at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin.  I had been interested in Japan for a long time and was happy to finally be able to study Japanese language and culture.  After my second year in college, I attended a 6-week summer language study program at Waseda University in Tokyo, so this will be my second time visiting Japan.
 
After graduating I worked for two years at a software development company called “Epic.”  Recently I married Elaine and now the two of us are moving to Japan.







スタッフ紹介


シンシア(ティア) マキ 鶴田

平成天皇と同じ誕生日です。生まれ年は違って、1961年です。

アメリカ・ノースカロライナ州生まれ、ペンシルベニア育ち。高校卒業後、大学進学のため、祖母と叔父がいるカルフォルニアへ。実はいくつかの学校で勉強しましたが、大部分を過ごしたのは、カルフォルニア大学サンタクルーズ校でした。

でも、一番の勉強になったことは、４人の子どもを産んだことです。最初の夫（日本人）と２１歳のときに結婚し、長男を２２歳で出産、そして1986年には長女が生まれました。同じ年、日本（愛知県西尾市）に移住しました。

その後、次女、二男を西尾で出産。

数年間、米国の家族や友人とはお互いを訪ねあいながら、いい関係を続けました。そのような環境で育った二男はバスケットボールの夢を追ってカルフォルニア・サンタクルーズへ。2007年春から、現在の夫といっしょに住み、現地の高校に通っています。

私はというと、現在はふたつの場所での生活をもてることになりました。家族のかけがえのない支えやNACスタッフの支えもあって、サンタクルーズでは夫と息子のために家事を切り盛りし、西尾に戻ったときは、この愛すべき英会話教室の為にできる限りを尽くすという生活です。

私にとって学校はおおいに誇れるものです。今に至るまでの学校が大好きですし、学校に関わっている人たちも大好きです。ほんとうにたくさんの友だちや友人家族に支えられています。

今、私はサンタクルーズと日本の間で二分されてしまいますが、NACは、私のこころと魂から決して離れる事はありません。ここ西尾に生活があることはありがたい事であり、わたしは教室に参加しているみんなと永遠につながっているのです。だから、ここに帰る家がないなんて考えられません。

学校やここでの生活を　頑丈で、特別なものにし、手助けをしてくれる人々に感謝しています。


田代 博美

こんにちは、 ひろみです。

ティアの New Age Connection で仕事をして、もう７年以上になります。 
わたしも以前はティアの生徒であり、Ｎ.Ａ.Ｃ.で英語を勉強していました。(もちろん、今もここで勉強を続けています！）

結婚もして、今や２児の母にもなりました。その子供たちも、今では同じＮ.Ａ.Ｃ.の生徒として、英語を学んでいます。わたしの夫も同じく生徒です。家族全員がＮ.Ａ.Ｃ.とつながっています。 

これからも、 ここＮ.Ａ.Ｃ.で知り合えた、ティアや素敵な仲間たちとずっとconnected (つながりをもって） していきたいです。


イレイン　ティッピング

アメリカのカルフォルニア州で生まれました。子供の時に私の家族は日本人の交換留学生を主催しました。たくさんの交換留学生とは今も連絡しあってます。だから、私は日本と日本語が大好きになりました。高校で三年間日本語を勉強しました。

ガン公立学園を卒業して、ウィスコンシン州アップルトンでロレンス大学に通いました。ロレンス大学は私立大学で教養部でした。いろいろなクラスを取ったが、専攻はアジア研究と日本語でした。日本についての授業をたくさん取りました。そして、日本がもっと大好きになりました。私の専攻を決めるのが間に合わなかったので、日本で勉強しに行けませんでした。もう一生日本に行けないかと心配しましたが、好運にも ティアと知り合って、この度、行くことができるようになり楽しみです．

大学で夫と知り合って、卒業後、２００９年八月十六日に結婚しました。二人とも専門は日本語だから日本でたくさんの機会、経験できる  日本に暮らすのは楽しみしています！

英語を教えるのは楽しみにして、たくさん友達を作るといいんですが！


ジュリー ロジャース

私はオーストラリア・シドニーで生まれましが、日本に深い愛と繋がりを感じています。NACとは長い付き合いになります。２００３年に英会話講師として関わって、今年、再びNACにもどって来れた事をとてもうれしく思っています。

気楽で思いやりのあるNACの雰囲気を楽しみながら、いろいろな年代のグループや個人レッスンを受け持っています。外国語としての英語教育のためのケンブリッジ・サーティフィケイトを取得しています。

私が旅や言語、異文化を探求することへ熱意を傾けてきた事が、新たに「外国旅行者向け」英語コースを生み出すこととなりました。

私は日本語も話しますので、翻訳や通訳にそのスキルを生かしています。また、ボランティアのドキュメンタリー映画プロジェクト「ピース・オン・ウィールズ」にも関わっています。この映画は、日本の障害をもった芸術家で平和を愛する主人公を追ったものです。映画は日本語と英語で見る事ができます。詳しいことはウェブサイトwww.peaceonwheels.netをご覧ください。

余暇には・・・私にそんな時間があるのかは疑問ですが・・・あるときには、ダンスしたり、時間を外して自然のなかでリラックスしたり、インドや日本のお寺で精神を落ち着かせたりしています。



牧　一心

僕とＮＡＣの付合いは、かれこれ二十二年を数えます。物心付く前から家には、英語を習いに来る生徒の方々がたくさんいて、同年代の生徒も多く賑やかでした。学校に通っていなかった僕は、よく
クラスに混ぜてもらい、一緒に楽しんでいました。

成人にいたる現在まで、教室の移動が数回に渡って行われましたが、NACは常に僕の生活の一部でした。

今ではＮＡＣの建物美観管理隊長を務め、裏方作業を担っています。みなさんの授業をより居心地の良い空間にすべく、活動してま いりますので、宜しくお願いします。

長年ＮＡＣにたずさわり、英会話に接してきて、いつも感じる事を申し上げたいと思います。他国語は、ふだん見えない自分を垣間見ることができる、ということです。母語では照れくさくて言えない事や、表現できない本心が、ぽろりと自然に口を突いて出ることがあります。

それが恥ずかしげもなく！何も異国の人との、繋がりの手段だけではありません。語学はまだ見ぬ内面の隅を照らす懐中電灯です。冒険グッズです。さぁみんな手をとって、新しい世代に繋がる橋を渡りましょう、秘められた素晴らしき未来へ！


卓宏　鶴田　

みなさん　こんにちは、おひさしぶりです。Takaです。
N.A.Cとはここ１０年間いろんな形でかかわり、いろいろありましたね。
N.A.C２０周年記念パーティーは本当によかったですよ．
２０１１年で２５周年記念になり、また楽しみですな．
近頃は、カルフォルニア、サンタクルーズからティアの手助け、N.A.Cの和訳、アドバイザーとしてヘルプとしてかかわってます。
そして、生徒さんでアメリカへいって生の体験をしたい時は，サンタクルーズ近辺、サンフランシスコなど喜んでお手伝いしますので。


ブラッド　チッピング

私はアメリカのメリーランド州で生まれ、ウィスコンシンで育ちました。高校卒業後、ウィスコンシン州のアップルトンにあるロレンス大学で物理と日本語を勉強しました。長い間日本に興味を持っていて、やっと日本語と日本文化を勉強出来て嬉しかったです。大学二年生の夏休みの時、六週間、早稲田大学で勉強しましたので今度日本に来るのは二回目になります。

大学から卒業して、私は二年間「EPIC」と言うソフトウェア技術開発社で働きました。最近はイレインと結婚し、二人で日本に引っ越すことになりました。
