HISTORY OF NAC
In September, 1986, I moved from Woodland, California to Nishio, Japan with two small children and their father, Motohiko Maki. We wanted to live together and to raise our children with their grandparents in Nishio. I also hoped to teach English.
Motohiko soon reconnected with his old friends and classmates. Word spread quickly in this “little” town that he had returned with an American wife and two children. The shop his family ran, an ice cream parlor and coffee shop, Parlor Shine, had been a “hotspot” from years before. Many people still reminisce about those days in the 50’s. It was a popular place where people loved connecting and eating traditional Japanese Obanyaki, or new style ice creams, “American Coffee,” and sandwiches.
We didn’t have to try hard to get word out that we would be teaching English. One friend, a classmate of Motohiko’s from High School, Art Teacher Mr. Sugita, helped us tremendously by making gorgeous signs and other advertising notices for our school. As a matter of fact, he introduced us to one of his classes at a high school, and, from that group, seven students made up the very first English class I taught.
From there on, it was by word of mouth that people connected with us.
The name I thought of for our school was New Age Connection. Motohiko took to it right away. We were the New Age sort, and we did have New Age ideas. Connecting with our friends, family, and acquaintances was what we loved doing. The study of English or another language language surely helps people learn about and connect to the world!
There were only seven foreigners in Nishio in 1986. All of them were working for FUKUDA English school, which has since closed. That makes our school, New Age Connection, the oldest English conversation school in Nishio!
All sorts of classes were requested, all ages, and I began traveling out to teach as well. I first began by driving out to Gamagori for a number of classes, which lasted a few years… Since then I’ve taught classes all over: Kota, Ishiki, Hekinan, Okazaki, Anjo, Nagoya, etc. In kindergartens, cram schools, and even a beauty college.
Our school has changed locations a few times. From Parlor Shine to “Megumi House” (so named because of our location by Megumi Hoikuen-Day Care Center). We relocated to another newer home around the corner for some years. In the fall of ‘07 we have been fortunate to be able to return to Megumi house in it’s renovated, “refreshed” form! People who know me know how much I love the older Japanese homes, and Megumi house seems to love the life we’ve been bringing to it as well!
When my children were young, and I taught many classes in the coffee shop, my kids often sat in and/ or interrupted our classes. I offset the interruption by serving what’s become somewhat popular baked goods. Banana bread and chocolate chip cookies are the biggest hits. My children were usually a hit as well, being able to understand and speak English. They were perfect examples of bi-lingualism!
I’ve taught young children who have grown up and now bring their own children for us to teach! Many students went abroad and continue to keep in touch, mainly in English, Thank you!! Our connections mean so much, to them as well as to me!
The variety of teachers we’ve had… is somewhat mind boggling! I’ve lost track of some of them, but many remain good friends. They came from the states, of course, but also Canada, Australia, England, Singapore, Viet Nam, New Zealand. My students and I have met so many people from around the world! Some of my teachers married Japanese, and have gone on to open their own schools!
I found the teachers I hired to help,, the same way students came to us . . . through family and friends. Advertising was never something we had to do. Staying connected with old friends and students has been what has kept us here- living, having fun, being productive and vibrant in this wonderful town, Nishio, our Nippon!
In October of 2006, we marked 20 years of teaching English in Nishio, Japan with a wonderful gathering of old and new students and friends, celebrating in the Hirahara hillside with music, food and dance.
At present, I, Thia-Cynthia, have been spending much time in California since our youngest son has wanted to attend American high school. I’ve been the most fortunate person having all the connections I have. Our teachers and managers bless us with their energy, positivity, and love. Their time spent maintaining and keeping our school running is an inspiring Masterpiece of work!

ニューエイジコネクション
英会話教室の道のり
１９８６年９月、二人の子供と彼らの父親である牧元彦氏と共にカルフォルニア・ウッドランドから西尾市に引っ越してきました。西尾で子供達の祖父母と一緒に住んで、子供を育てようと思ったからです。その頃から英会話を教えることを考えていました。
元彦は帰国後、地元の旧友たちと再会をしていく中で、元彦がアメリカ人の奥さんと子供と西尾に帰ってきたという噂は、この小さな街にまたたく間に広まりました。彼の家族が営む喫茶店パーラーシャインは以前からお客が絶えず、活気にあふれていました。いまだに５０年代の懐かしい日々の思い出をたくさんの人から聞くほどです。そこは人々のふれあいの場所として有名で、日本の大判焼きや、当時としてはまだ新しいスタイルのアイスクリームやアメリカンコーヒー、サンドイッチなどでお客さんをもてなしていました。
声を大にして、英語教えます！という必要もありませんでした。元彦の高校時代の友人で美術教師の杉田さんには、英会話教室の看板や広告を作るにあたって多大な手助けをしていただきました。実のところは、杉田さんが我々を彼の高校の授業に招いたことをきっかけに、その授業にいた生徒７名からできた英会話クラスが私が教えた最初のクラスとなったのです。
それ以来、口コミで知られるようになり、いろいろな人とつながっていきました。
英会話教室の名前に思いついたのは「ニューエイジコネクション」でした。元彦はすぐにその名前が気に入りました。なぜなら私たちはいわば「新時代の人種」に属し、「新しい」考え方を持っていましたから。友だち、家族、知人と「つながりをもつ(connect)」ことが大好きでした。英語やその他の言語を学ぶとは、まさに世界を学ぶこと、世界とつながることへの手助けとなるのです。
１９８６年当時西尾に外国人は、フクダ英語学校で働いていたわずか７人だけでした。現在、その学校はもう閉校して存在していないので、ニューエイジコネクション英会話教室が西尾一の老舗になります。
授業はさまざまな要望に合わせて行いました。年齢別、そして出張授業もしました。当初、蒲郡にいくつかクラスを持っていたため、そこには数年通いました。それ以来、さまざまなところで教えました。幸田、一色、碧南、岡崎、安城、名古屋などなど。他に幼稚園、塾、美容専門学校にまでも足を運びました。
教室は拠点を何度か変えています。パーラーシャインから恵ハウス（恵保育園のすぐ裏にあるという理由でつけられた名前）への移転。そして、近所の一軒家に数年間拠点を移したこともありました。そして、幸いなことに２００７年秋より、再び改装により心機一転した恵ハウスに戻ってくることができました。私は日本の和のスタイルをもったこの家がとてもすきですし、恵ハウスも私たちがもたらす生活をとても気に入っているように思います。
娘や息子が小さく、まだ喫茶店の店内で多くのクラスを行っていた頃は、よく彼らがクラスの席に座り込んで邪魔に入ってきたものでした。そんなとき、後に好評となっていく私の手作り焼き菓子でそんなハプニングをお詫びしたものでした。バナナブレッドやチョコチップクッキーは特に人気がありました。もちろん英語を理解し、話す子供達も人気者でした。バイリンガルのいいお手本となっていました。
教えていた子供たちが大人になって、今では彼らの子供が英語を習いに来ています。たくさんの生徒が海外に行きました。連絡もとり続けています。ありがたいことに、たいていは英語で。ここで築いたつながりは彼らにとっても、私にとっても、とっても大切なことなのです。
教室で働く先生たちの様々な個性には驚かされてばかりでした。何人かは連絡が途絶えてしまいましたが、彼らの多くとは今でもよき友人です。アメリカだけでなく、カナダ、オーストラリア、イングランド、シンガポール、ベトナム、ニュージーランドなど、世界中から来た多くの先生方に、生徒や私は巡り会ってきたのです。何人かは日本の方と結婚し、自分の教室をオープンさせた先生もいるんです！
教室を手伝ってもらう先生も、生徒が私たちと縁があったように、家族や友人を通じて知り合いました。求人広告などに載せたりという必要などまったくありませんでした。ただ、友だちや生徒とつながりがあったからこそ今の私たちがあるんです。このすばらしい街、西尾で生活し、楽しんで、創造し、脈動しながら。
２００６年１０月、ここ西尾で私たちの英会話教室は２０周年を向かえ、素敵なパーティーで祝いました。新旧の生徒達、友人が、西尾市の平原の滝で会し、音楽、食べ物、ダンスでお祝いをしました。
現在、私、シア（シンシア）は、一番下の息子がアメリカの高校進学を志望して以来、ほとんどの時間をカルフォルニアで過ごしています。本当に私はいろいろなつながりに支えられ、恵まれています。教室の先生やマネージャーたちからエネルギーや前向きさ、そして彼らの愛というかたちで幸せをもらっています。教室を維持管理するために費やした彼らの時間はすばらしい仕事の結晶です。
この驚きに満ちた世界は学ぶことがいっぱいです。そして、技術の進歩で容易に連絡が取り合える「新しい時代(New Age)」に私たちは生きています。さあ、あなたも私たちの仲間になりましょう！そして、これからも仲間としてつながっていきましょう！
